Education

The news is littered with stories of football players, baseball pitchers, soccer goalies, and even cheerleaders getting injured while playing the sport they love. You can also find several instances where fans and spectators have lost their footing and fallen from bleacher units while cheering on their peers.

No parent wants to receive a phone call, nor does a school want to make the call, that a child has been injured while running around the playgrounds, playing a game of tag or participating in a pick-up game of basketball but, inevitably, the phone calls will come. Nut who is to blame? Is it the school's fault when a child's hands slip from the horizontal ladders? Are the teachers to blame when a less-than athletic student sprains his/her ankle while playing soccer during recess?

Many schools are simply banning recess, tearing down playgrounds and eliminating certain sports from their athletic program to avoid the possibility of injuries. But, is this the best solution? Couldn't someone get hurt just as easily by stepping off the sidewalk at the wrong time or simply getting in the car without buckling up?

Making sure that your facilities are as up-to-date as possible and that your staff is equipped with the knowledge to handle a dangerous situation can help prevent the possibility of injuries and also save you hundreds of thousands of dollars. Spending the extra money to make sure your athletic fields, basketball courts and bleachers are safe for use can save you money in the long run. It's human nature to want to point the finger, don't be the target!
